Images of America: Southlake

Learn the rich history of Southlake through more than 175 vintage photographs from the private collections of Southlake Historical Society members, some of which have never been seen by the public before.  The history of the settling of the Southlake area dates back to the 1840s, when families journeyed together across the Red River to claim the land for which they had contracted (with the empresario Peters Colony) while the Republic of Texas still governed the land.

The City commissioned these ornaments in 1996 before the 1919 farmhouse was demolished.  The McPherson-Fechtel farm sat on the site of today's Town Hall in Town Square.

W. C. McPherson purchased the property in 1895, and in 1919 he built a four-room house. Over the years, several outbuildings were added, and in the 1950s, the Fechtel family bought the property, finished the upstairs and expanded the house to five bedrooms. The Fechtels established a chicken hatchery on the property and for more than 30 years, celebrated Easter egg hunts, picnics, weekend getaways, and weddings there. The house became well known in the community as the spot for weekend retreats by organizations and churches, such as St. Francis Catholic Church in Grapevine, which for 34 years had parish picnics at the farm.

Bumpy Crooked Lane as it ran east from Kimball Avenue in the 1960's.  Long before, it was a stage line from McKinney to Birdville and even before that, an Indian trail.

Photograph courtesy of the C. M. Gordon family

These note cards make great hostess gifts!

The SHS offers these cards (4-1/2 inches by 5-1/2 inches) as the first in a series of Southlake scenes. The sepia photograph is of Crooked Lane, as seen in the 1960s from the home of C. M. Gordon, one of the town’s founding fathers who helped organize efforts to incorporate the 1.62 square miles. (The town of Hurst was making moves to annex the area.)

In an interview with SHS member, Barbara Gordon (Mr. Gordon’s wife and founder of Barbara Gordon Montessori School in Colleyville) remembered the hot summer of 1956 when she, her husband and a handful of neighbors moved at breakneck speed to circulate the petition required in order to incorporate the small parcel of land. The group met in August and by September 6th, the petition was approved by the state, and incorporation election notices were posted. The election was held at the Carroll School. Only 28 days had passed, and the final vote to incorporate was 30 to 24. By the slimmest of margins, the town of Southlake was born.

The Southlake Historical Society wishes to thank the C. M. Gordon family for their continued support and permission to reproduce this family photograph.
