Promoting the preservation, understanding and appreciation of Southlake history
| Welcome to Texas |
Dear Friends,Pull up a chair and come on in! We are excited to welcome you to Southlake's new "museum" -- the web site of the Southlake Historical Society. Whether you are an old-timer or a newcomer, living in Southlake is a much richer experience when you know its history. From the pioneering Lonesome Dove Baptist Church (where do you think Larry McMurtry got the name?) to Dragon football tradition, there is much in Southlake for you and your family to learn about and be proud of. Start your journey by clicking Read All About It and Magical History Tour, both at right. Also, explore the Timeline in History, above. And while you're at it -- do you have a story to tell about your life in Southlake? Or about your Southlake business? Click History, above, and simply type in your remembrances. Also, let us know if you have photos of interest, and we can arrange to scan them. Visit often, as we've just begun to put onto this site some of the many photos of Southlake people and places, oral histories and interviews, documents, maps, newspaper stories, etc., that we've collected or been given. Meanwhile, we're glad you stopped by. As the pioneers said when offering hospitality: The latchstring is always out! Cordially, Anita Robeson, President P.S. Keep reading to find out what neat projects we're working on.
There's a lot that's new at Southlake's historical society! Join us.After all, this is Texas, so you and your family will want to join and enjoy your Southlake Historical Society. It's very inexpensive to join (see To Join above, or find membership forms in the Southlake Public Library), and as a member you'll be opening a door to interesting insights and delightful stories from the past. Here are some of the neat projects we're working on or planning: 1. Furnishing Southlake's log house with items from the 1840s and 1850s. 2. Sponsoring tours of the log house using docents dressed in period costumes. Many of our school visitors will be fourth-graders studying Texas history. 3. Doing a historical survey of Southlake, then photographing the houses and sites and compiling a historical resource. 4. Using the information from the survey to place special markers around town so that people can become more aware of our history. 5. Taping oral histories with people who have witnessed the unfolding of Southlake's history, from its farm days through the founding of the city. 6. Gathering historical information and photos about our city's businesses. 7. Archiving photographs, news stories, artifacts and more. 8. Presenting interesting monthly programs about history that will cause people to laugh, shed a tear -- and think. So JOIN US. We'd love to get to know you and to have you become involved in one of these interesting projects, if your schedule permits. Best, Anita |
